Sarah Weddington Writing Prize for New Student Scholarship in Reproductive Rights

Funder: Center for Reproductive Rights (CRR) and Law Students for Reproductive Justice (LSRJ)

Purpose: Recognizes and awards student scholarship exploring reproductive rights and justice issues in the United States.

Award Amount:

  • 1st place: $750 (presumption of publishability in NYU School of Law's Review of Law and Social Change with expedited review)

  • 2nd place: $500

  • 3rd place: $250
    • Eligibility

    • Target: Current law students or 2012 graduates
    • Requirement: Original scholarship only
    • Restrictions: Papers being considered for publication elsewhere are ineligible for first place but eligible for second and third place. Papers already contracted for publication as of January 2014 will not be accepted.

      Focus Areas

      No specific theme; encourages expansive thinking about reproductive rights and justice with intersectional lens considering race, ethnicity, class, gender, sexuality, and immigration status. Example topics include:
    • Abortion coverage for low-income women
    • Affordable Care Act implementation
    • Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART)
    • Birthing options
    • Immigration reform and RR/RJ
    • LGBTQ community and RR/RJ
    • Policing of pregnant women
    • Rape culture and its impact on RR/RJ
    • Sex education
    • Trends in recent anti-abortion regulations

      Paper Requirements

    • Minimum 20 pages (not including footnotes)
    • Double-spaced in 12-point font with footnotes in 10-point font
    • Bluebook citation format
    • Domestic focus (may draw on international and comparative materials)
    • Should apply reproductive justice and/or human rights framework
    • Encouraged to amplify lesser heard voices, apply intersectional approach, suggest innovative solutions, and account for practical realities and lived experiences
