Sanibel-Captiva Recovery Fund

Overview: Emergency relief fund activated ahead of major hurricanes to support recovery and rebuild efforts on Sanibel and Captiva Islands.

Program Status:

  • Activated: Ahead of Hurricane Milton (October 2024)

  • Geographic Scope: Sanibel and Captiva Islands, Florida
  • Historical Impact:

  • CFI has activated recovery fund in past disasters: Hurricane Charley, Irma, Ian, and COVID-19 pandemic

  • Since Hurricane Ian (September 28, 2022): Over $1 million in grants distributed to local nonprofit organizations

  • As of August 1, 2026: $215,000 distributed to 37 small businesses; 15 more in pipeline
  • Funding Uses:

  • Grants to local partnering nonprofit organizations

  • Recovery and economic revitalization investments for the community

  • Small business grants (up to $5,000 per business)

  • Nonprofit employee assistance (see separate program)

  • Community rebuilding and resilience efforts

    Funding Application Process

    For Nonprofit Organizations:
    1. Submit proposal for recovery or community rebuilding initiative
    2. Describe project and community impact
    3. Submit to CFI for grant consideration
    4. Awards made to selected nonprofit partners

    For Small Businesses:
    1. Complete small business grant application (see Small Business Grants program details)
    2. Apply through FISH of SanCap or with Chamber of Commerce assistance
    3. Provide documentation of hurricane-related losses
    4. Awards up to $5,000 per business

    For Nonprofit Employees:
    1. Apply through F.I.S.H of SanCap
    2. Provide proof of employment and disaster losses
    3. Receive emergency relief assistance
