San José Learns

San José Learns is dedicated to empowering young learners in grades TK-3 from under-resourced communities through high-quality out-of-school time programs.

Background: Launched by Mayor Sam Liccardo in 2015, this initiative is committed to closing the achievement gap, particularly for students of color.

Geographic Scope: San José, California

Focus Areas:

• Out-of-school time programs for elementary students (TK-3)
• Academic achievement gap closure
• Support for students of color
• English Language Arts (ELA) proficiency

Target Population:

• Students in grades TK-3 from under-resourced communities
• Students of color
• Low-income students
• Students with disabilities

Impact Data (2022-2023):

• 55% of students met or exceeded third-grade ELA standard overall
• 45% of Black students met or exceeded ELA standard
• 29% of Latino/a/x students met or exceeded ELA standard
• 30% of low-income students met or exceeded ELA standard
• 23% of students with disabilities met or exceeded ELA standard

How It Works: Through an annual grant program administered by the Library Foundation, eligible school districts receive resources to maximize their budgets and partner with exceptional program providers.
