SafetyNet Shelter Grant Program

Purpose: Public health intervention to prevent families from unsheltered homelessness by rapidly identifying safe alternatives and providing flexible funding for emergency overnight shelter and necessities.

Geographic Scope: Statewide Massachusetts coverage with 9 overnight sites and 2 day sites established

Target Populations:

  • Extremely low-income families with children

  • Pregnant people

  • Both Massachusetts residents and new arrivals

  • Families requiring urgent and immediate emergency shelter
  • Program Components:

  • Emergency overnight shelter through overflow options for state Emergency Assistance Shelter Program (EA)

  • Short-term stays prior to longer-term placements

  • Day services centers for families in crisis

  • Transitional housing support

  • Wraparound services and technical assistance to community-based organizations
  • Funding: $5 million deployed to community-based organizations
