Richard Garner Memorial Scholarship
Overview: The Richard Garner Memorial Scholarship was created to honor the life of City of Madison Firefighter/Paramedic Richard Garner Jr. who died in the line of duty on April 1, 2018. Richard was a dedicated firefighter/paramedic and active community servant. The scholarship was established to help those entering the Fire and EMS fields.
Geographic Scope
Wisconsin (Madison area focus)- Number of awards: Two scholarships awarded each year
- Award amount: $2,500 per scholarship
- Distribution: Awards are granted directly to the bursar's office of the educational institution
Award Details
- High School Diploma required
- High School or College GPA of 3.0 or higher, OR 2.5 GPA with a history of volunteering in the community
- Acceptance or currently enrolled at a college for Fire or EMS related studies
- Copy of High School or College Transcripts required
- Three letters of recommendation required
- Essay required explaining why applying and what qualities/attributes set you apart
Eligibility Requirements
- Application deadline: June 15 (annually)
- Each applicant is eligible for one scholarship per academic school year
- Must complete a formal interview (in person) with the Richard Garner Memorial Committee
