Overview

The EMDR Research Foundation offers research grants to support quality, publishable studies on EMDR therapy and other scientific approaches to mental health. The Foundation invests in the development and dissemination of high-quality research to strengthen understanding and effective use of EMDR therapy.

    Eligibility

  • Required Qualifications: Master's degree or doctorate in social work, psychology, nursing, or a related field
  • Institutional Affiliation: Must be affiliated with a college, university, or research institution
  • Practitioners/Clinicians: Those with relevant research experience are encouraged to apply
  • Collaborative Partnerships: Encouraged and preferred between researchers at institutions and EMDR practitioners
  • Fiscal Agent: The affiliated institution must serve as fiscal agent; if no institutional affiliation, PI assumes this responsibility
  • Geographic Scope: U.S. and international researchers accepted; applications must be in English with budgets in U.S. dollars

Research Priorities

Studies should address one of three priority areas:

1. Advancing Evidence Based Practice: Areas needing more evidence:
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Military PTSD
- Phantom limb pain
- Impact of cardiac events
- Cancer diagnosis and treatment
- Recovery enhancement

2. Addressing the Global Burden of Trauma:
- Disaster response (natural or man-made)
- Early intervention protocols effectiveness
- Child or adult group protocols
- EMDR standard protocols in disaster response

3. Building Clinical Evidence: Areas needing more research:
- Addictions
- Eating disorders
- Dissociative disorders
- Medical/somatic conditions
- Suicide prevention
- Applies across the lifespan (e.g., adolescent suicide, geriatric depression)

    Project Duration

  • Maximum Duration: 2 years
  • Progress Report: Due 1 year after funding cycle begins with overview of progress and expenditure accounting
  • Final Report: Due upon project completion with expenditure summary and outcomes
  • Publications: Articles submitted to or accepted for publication should be sent to the Foundation
  • Unexpended Funds: Must be returned to Foundation at end of 2-year period

Applicants are strongly encouraged to review CONSORT guidelines (www.consort-statement.org) for research design standards, especially for large grant requests. The Foundation's review process favors studies meeting these standards. Guidelines for social and psychological interventions are also available.

#### Submission Format

  • Online Application Required: The Foundation only accepts applications through their online application system

  • File Formats: Word (.DOC) or Portable Document (.PDF) format only

  • Timing: All documents must be submitted simultaneously; no extensions granted

  • Late Submissions: Materials received after deadline will not be accepted or reviewed
  • #### Required Application Documents

    1. Online Application Form including:
    - Principal Investigator's name, phone number(s), email address
    - Complete mailing address
    - University/institution (when applicable)
    - Graduate department or school (when applicable)
    - Project title
    - Abstract (may be entered into form field or uploaded)

    2. Proposal Narrative (Maximum 10 double-spaced pages, not including references):
    - Statement of the problem and specific research aims
    - Background literature
    - Research design & methods (including measures and data analysis plan)
    - Significance of the proposed study
    - References included in same file

    3. Copies of Measures:
    - Combine all measures into one file
    - Upload through online application

    4. Letters of Agreement:
    - From any partnering organizations
    - Upload each letter (up to two) or combine all into one file

    5. Institutional Review Board (IRB) Approval:
    - Evidence of IRB approval required (or equivalent for international researchers)
    - Obtaining prior to application increases chances of funding
    - Upload through online application

    6. Timeline:
    - For proposed study identifying key tasks
    - Upload through online application

    7. Project Budget:
    - May exceed the amount of the grant
    - Upload through online application

    8. Curriculum Vitae:
    - PI and research team members

    #### Important Notes

  • Incomplete Applications: Will not be reviewed

  • Paper/Faxed Documents: Not accepted

  • Document Organization: Applicants advised to keep complete set of application documents for their files

  • IRB Requirement: Applications must include documentation of IRB approval at time of submission
  • #### Selection Criteria
    A committee of scholars with expertise in research design and EMDR will independently and blindly review each application based on:

    1. Degree to which proposed study addresses Foundation's priority areas
    2. Overall methodological quality of proposed research (qualitative and quantitative methods both valued; evaluation based on soundness of methodological choices such as sample size, randomization, treatment fidelity, etc.)
    3. Potential significance of study for building knowledge and strengthening EMDR practice
    4. Feasibility of proposed study and applicant's ability to complete it in timely manner

  • Applications reviewed for completeness

  • Narratives sent to multiple reviewers who score and provide comments

  • Each funding cycle is independent

  • Feedback provided to unfunded applicants to guide potential resubmission
