Program Focus

The grant funds pedestrian safety improvements through the installation of Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons, which are one option for creating safer crosswalks.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicant Requirements:

  • Must be an existing community organization that has been working for safe streets or safe routes in the community

  • Ideal applicants have worked with local jurisdiction on projects where RRFB is appropriate safety enhancement
  • Local Jurisdiction Requirements:

  • Government with jurisdiction over the street must certify willingness to accept and install the Beacons

  • Must have ability to fund the installation of the beacons

  • Must complete Ownership Acceptance Form

  • Must complete Crossing Location Evaluation worksheet
  • Selection Criteria

    America Walks will evaluate projects based on:

  • Response to demonstrated community need

  • Broad and diverse community support based on intentional foundation of equity and authentic engagement

  • Culture of inclusive design

  • Enhancement of safety and increased physical activity

  • Service to under-invested communities

  • Appropriate treatment selection - RRFB chosen after consideration of other crosswalk treatments
  • Priority Considerations:

  • Projects centering concerns of BIPOC residents

  • Projects reaching across community demographics to build coalitions

  • Projects creating unique civic partnerships with new perspectives
    • Important Notes

    • RRFBs are just one way to create a safe crossing
    • Not suitable in all situations
    • Applicants should consider alternative safe crossing options before applying
