Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Student Incentive

Overview: This incentive provides funding to Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (NP) students currently pursuing advanced degrees to support their education and commit to rural practice.

Award Amount: $40,000 total - $20,000 per year for two years, disbursed in quarterly installments of $5,000

Geographic Scope: Tennessee, specifically rural and underserved areas

Focus Areas: Mental health workforce development, psychiatric nursing

Purpose: Addresses the severe shortage of mental health professionals, with rural areas hit the hardest. Designed to recruit psychiatric NP students to practice in underserved Tennessee communities.

Eligibility:

  • Currently enrolled in a Master's, Doctoral, or Graduate Certificate program in Psychiatric Nursing

  • Individuals seeking their initial certification as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner

  • Currently enrolled and starting coursework

  • Applicants towards the end of their education program must apply at least 4 months prior to graduation

  • NOT eligible: Current Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners continuing further education

  • Planning to practice in a rural or underserved area of Tennessee
  • Service Commitment: Recipients must commit to serving two years in a rural or underserved practice site following graduation. Students must find their own practice location, which must be approved by TCWD.

    Spending: No stipulation on how funds can be spent; considered taxable income
