PowerUp Youth Leadership Program

Status: Active; deadline September 14, 2026 by 5:00 p.m.

Geographic Scope: West River Electric's service territory, South Dakota

Program Overview:
Youth leadership development program designed to unlock potential, build leadership skills, explore strengths, and discover career opportunities.

Eligibility:

High school Juniors or Seniors during the 2026-2027 school year

Interest in furthering leadership skills, gaining knowledge about cooperatives, and team building

Ability to fully commit with a positive, open mind

Must be member of WREA or child of member

Selection:

20 high school Juniors or Seniors will be selected

All applicants reviewed by PowerUp executive committee

Program Components:

Two required full-day sessions: October 13, 2026 (Native American/Columbus Day) and January 19, 2027 (Martin Luther King Day)

Hours: 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Topics: Cooperative business model, electrical safety, career exploration, leadership and personal growth

Networking with peers and industry experts

Inclement weather make-up sessions available

Student Commitments:

Attend both required program days (mandatory)

Encouraged to attend Member Appreciation Day (September)

Encouraged to attend Annual Meeting (October)

Students responsible for own transportation

Opportunities & Awards:

Scholarships available to students who exceed expectations and attend all sessions

All-expense paid trips available based on point system:

- Three-day Youth Excursion trip to Bismarck, North Dakota (July 2026)
- Week-long Youth Tour trip to Washington, D.C. (June 2026)

Points earned through:

- Attending both required sessions
- Attending Member Appreciation Day
- Attending Annual Meeting
- Attending tailgate event during high school football season
- Community volunteering (max 6 hours)
