Phoenix Scholarships

Overview: The Mark Garwood Foundation Phoenix Scholarships are awarded to individuals in south Florida who are in recovery, committed to long-term sobriety, are ready to begin or continue their education, and have a financial need.

Award Amount: Up to $5,000 per scholarship. Funds may be used to help pay for tuition, books, and other school-related expenses that grants and other aid may not cover.

Geographic Scope

Applicants must live in St. Lucie, Martin, Okeechobee, Palm Beach, or Broward County in south Florida.

    Eligibility Requirements

  • In recovery and committed to long-term sobriety
  • Ready to begin or continue education at an accredited college, university, or trade school
  • Financial need demonstrated
  • If not already enrolled, must apply to an approved institution within 60 days of scholarship award
  • May attend any accredited college, university, or trade school in Florida or online
  • Must meet all requirements and agree to all conditions of scholarship award

    Application Timeline

  • Applications accepted: July 15 – September 15 annually
  • Applicant notification: Within 2 weeks of deadline
  • Semifinalist interviews: Approximately 2 weeks after notification
  • Finalist notification: Approximately 1 week after interviews
  • Scholarship awards event: Date varies (2025 awards on November 7)

How to Apply

Application Process

Step-by-Step:
1. Read and agree to the Qualifications and Requirements document
2. Read and agree to the Random Drug Testing Policy
3. Read and agree to the Social Media Policy
4. Read and agree to the FERPA Consent Form for Access to Educational Records
5. Complete the online application form on the foundation's website
6. Prepare your essay response (see below)
7. Submit application before 11:59 PM EST on September 15
8. Await notification of semifinalist selection (within 2 weeks of deadline)
9. If selected as semifinalist, attend interview (approximately 2 weeks after notification)
10. If selected as finalist, attend scholarship awards event

    Required Materials

  • Completed online application form
  • Essay response (see narrative question below)
  • All required policy acknowledgments and consent forms (reviewed but not signed until interview, if selected)

    Submission Format

  • Essay format: Must be submitted as:
  • - Word document (.doc/.docx), OR - PDF file, OR - Photo of handwritten essay saved as JPG (.jpg)
  • Submission method: Upload essay to online application portal
  • Deadline: 11:59 PM EST on September 15 (annually)
