Performing Americas Program - Creative Exchange Residencies

Program Type: International performing arts exchange program

Geographic Scope: United States, Latin America, and the Caribbean

Program Duration: 2-5 week residencies

Overview:
The Performing Americas Program (PAP) is a partnership between the National Performance Network and La RED (Red de Promotores Culturales de Latinoamérica y el Caribe). It creates a structure for systematic exchange of contemporary performing arts touring in the hemisphere through residencies that provide opportunities for artist-to-community engagement.

Focus Areas:

  • Educational activities and creative research

  • Setting work on a host company

  • Technical skills workshops

  • Contemporary performing arts exchanges

  • Reciprocal exchanges between artists and hosts

  • Knowledge building and creation of new performance work

  • Learning of new methodologies and skill building
  • Program Components:
    The Creative Exchange has two components:
    1. Residencies: 2-5 week flexible residencies for extended artist-to-community engagement
    2. Mobility Awards: Support for artists and hosts to meet face-to-face with potential partners for future exchange projects (travel only, maximum $1,000 per award)

  • Artists, curators, and designers throughout the Americas

  • Focus on equitable exchange

  • Partnerships between artists and hosts in Caribbean, Latin America, and United States
  • Impact (as of 2012):

  • Awarded support for 55 artist projects

  • 47 different host sites

  • 34 artist/companies toured

  • 30 additional Creative Exchange residencies funded

  • Presentations by 50+ U.S.-based presenting organizations

  • 17 U.S. artist companies presented in 47 different cities
  • Funding Sources:
    Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, Robert Sterling Clark Foundation, and for Los Angeles artists/organizations: City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs
