Pat Allynson Winter Fund

Overview: The Pat Allynson Winter Fund comprises a significant portion of the Stuntz Foundation's resources. The late Dr. Winter directed that grants from this Fund reflect her expressed priorities. Her primary purpose was to support female graduate students in mycology who plan to pursue a career in teaching.

About Dr. Patricia Winter: Born in May 1906 in Illinois, Dr. Winter was a talented, educated woman with diverse interests. During the 1930's she trained and performed as an opera singer, completed medical school and took flying lessons from Lindbergh, becoming a licensed pilot in 1930. In 1935 she moved to Seattle and started her medical career. During her 47 years of medical practice she married and became a mother. She joined the Puget Sound Mycological Society in 1972 and got to know Dr. Stuntz, admiring his expertise in mycology and his devotion to students.

Geographic Scope: Pacific Northwest (Washington State, Oregon, Idaho, western Montana, southwest British Columbia, and southeast and south-coastal Alaska)

Award Preference Order:
1. Female students of mycology who plan to continue in teaching
2. Other students and post-doctoral fellows of mycology
3. General support of mycology classes or activities
4. Support for visiting lecturing professional mycologists
5. Amateur mycologists and support of their activities

Deadlines:

  • March 1st - Notifications sent by late April

  • October 1st - Notifications sent by late November

  • Requests for $1,000 or less accepted year-round
  • Application Process: Applicants wishing to apply to the Pat Winter Fund may use the same grant guidelines and application forms as the standard Stuntz Mycology Fund grants (Mini, Small, Individual, and Institutional Grants).

    2. Include a proposed budget with sufficient detail:
    - Descriptions of items
    - Numbers of samples
    - Quantities required
    - Unit costs
    - Total costs
    3. Include one or two letters of reference from colleagues, instructors, faculty advisors, or employers who can speak to your abilities

    Application Deadlines:

  • March 1st - for requests over $1,000

  • October 1st - for requests over $1,000

  • Year-round acceptance - for requests of $1,000 or less
