Institutional Grants

Overview: Institutional grants may be awarded to students, researchers, or teachers working under the auspices of a college/university, herbarium, museum, or other not-for-profit organization. All funds are to be used for the proposed research or educational activities.

Average Grant Size: $1,000 - $6,000

Geographic Scope: Pacific Northwest (Washington State, Oregon, Idaho, western Montana, southwest British Columbia, and southeast and south-coastal Alaska). Applicants not residing in the PNW may apply, provided their research involves PNW fungi.

Deadlines:

  • March 1st - Notifications sent by late April

  • October 1st - Notifications sent by late November

  • Requests for $1,000 or less accepted year-round
  • Eligible Applicants:

  • Students working under the auspices of a college/university, herbarium, museum, or not-for-profit organization

  • Researchers working under the auspices of a college/university, herbarium, museum, or not-for-profit organization

  • Teachers working under the auspices of a college/university, herbarium, museum, or not-for-profit organization
  • Priorities:

  • Priority given to projects involving mushroom-forming fungi ("macrofungi," "macromycetes")

  • Research and/or education focus

  • Results of interest to the broad Pacific Northwest mycological community
  • Allowable Costs:

  • Equipment

  • Supplies and analytical services for mycological research

  • Registration and travel for students to attend conferences (where they are presenting results of funded projects)

  • Materials and supplies for myco-education

  • Limited expenses for travel for fieldwork

  • Expenses for fungal herbaria
  • Restrictions - Do NOT Fund:

  • For-profit organizations or commercial companies

  • Salaries

  • Institutional overhead

  • Federal or institutionally set mileage and per diem rates for travel

  • Page charges

  • Applications from outside the Pacific Northwest (except when research focuses on PNW fungi)

  • College or university tuition

    1. Contact the Grants Manager by email with either a letter of inquiry or your application
    2. Include a proposed budget with sufficient detail:
    - Descriptions of items
    - Numbers of samples
    - Quantities required
    - Unit costs
    - Total costs
    3. Include one or two letters of reference from colleagues, instructors, faculty advisors, or employers who can speak to the applicant's abilities

    Application Deadlines:

  • March 1st - for requests over $1,000

  • October 1st - for requests over $1,000

  • Year-round acceptance - for requests of $1,000 or less
  • Required Materials:

  • Letter of inquiry or application form

  • Proposed budget

  • 1-2 letters of reference
  • Evaluation Criteria:

  • Does the proposal focus on fungi, especially mushroom-forming ones?

  • Do the proposed activities take place in the Pacific Northwest or involve or pertain to Pacific Northwest fungi?

  • Does the proposal involve research and/or education? If so, how important is the research to the region and/or how much need is there for the education program?

  • Would the proposed activities and their results be of interest to the broad Pacific Northwest mycological community, both amateur and professional?

  • Does the applicant have a reasonable plan for disseminating the results to the Pacific Northwest mycological community?

  • Has the applicant obtained (or attempted to obtain) funding from other sources?

  • Considering any indicated background and letters of reference, does the applicant's discussion of the project indicate proficiency in the subject matter?

  • Has the applicant received prior funding from the SMF? If so, were those activities completed successfully?

  • Does the proposed budget seem reasonable in light of the proposed scope-of-work and other sources of funding?

  • Will the data and results be used in ways that are consistent with the goals and objectives of the SMF?

  • Can the proposed work be completed in the time frame proposed?
