Oscar G. Brockett Essay Prize Grant

The Oscar G. Brockett Essay Prize honors the best essay published in English within a refereed scholarly journal or volume related to theatre research. Awarded by the American Society for Theatre Research, it includes a $1,500 cash prize and free conference registration. To qualify, essays must have been published in 2023, and authors must meet specific eligibility criteria, including prior membership in ASTR and a minimum time since obtaining their PhD.

Purpose
The Brockett Prize recognizes the best essay written and published in English in a refereed scholarly journal or volume published by a scholarly press and relating to any subject in theatre research, broadly construed. The presentation at the ASTR annual meeting includes an acknowledgement of the editor's contribution to the work.
Award
The Oscar G. Brockett Essay Prize, including a $1,500 cash award and a free conference registration, is jointly awarded by the American Society for Theatre Research and the Oscar G. Brockett Center for Theatre History and Criticism at the University of Texas-Austin.

Eligibility

Essays must have been published in the 2023 calendar year. To be eligible for nomination, the author:

• Must not have received the Brockett Essay prize in the past 3 years;
• Must have been a member of ASTR for at least 3 of the last 6 years, including the year the nomination is submitted; and
• Be at least seven years beyond the PhD.
