Summary

The ASTR Po-Hsien Chu International Scholar Award Fund aims to support international scholars facing unique challenges in the U.S. due to their visa status. This initiative offers annual research awards to up to two scholars, with a focus on at least one Asian recipient. The $1000 honorarium promotes access to funding for groundbreaking research in theatre and performance studies and encourages recipients to engage with the ASTR community through conferences and mentoring.

Overview

Purpose ASTR acknowledges that international scholars play a vital role in our field and face many obstacles specific to their international status, such as visa temporality and a lack of funding opportunities. To address these structural inequities, the Po-Hsien Chu International Scholar Award Fund is an ongoing initiative to provide an annual research award for up to two international scholars currently studying and/or working in the United States who do not hold citizenship or status as Permanent Lawful Residents of the United States. At least one of the award recipients must be an Asian scholar as defined according to the U.S. census. For this award, “Asian” is defined according to the U.S. census as a person holding citizenship in the Far East, Southeast Asia, or the Indian subcontinent including, for example, Cambodia, China, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippine Islands, Thailand, and Vietnam. These grants are intended to expand access to funding for international scholars to support their research in theatre and performance studies. Winners of this award are invited to submit their research to a working group or plenary session at ASTR’s annual conference, or to join ASTR’s mentoring network. Evaluation Applicants will be evaluated on the significance of their proposed research project and the applicant’s record of achievement in scholarship and/or service. Additional consideration will be given to the barriers facing the applicant due to their visa status and the contribution of the project to enriching global theatre and performance studies. Award This award provides a $1000 honorarium, which may be given to one winner or split among two recipients.
