Not eligible: The NACBS pre-dissertation fellowship cannot be held during the same year as a similar pre dissertation grant (such as those offered by the Council for European Studies or the SSRC).
Not eligible: Other agency/organizational or university grants up to $3000 may be held in conjunction with the NACBS grant.
Not eligible: In the case of grants over $3000, the NACBS will work with other organizations institutions to top up the value of the grant to the amount of the largest award for those applicants chosen for both the NACBS grant and another award.

Overview

The NACBS Pre-Dissertation Grants support Ph.D. candidates in conducting preliminary research on dissertation topics related to British history and studies. Each year, two grants of $4000 are awarded to students in U.S. or Canadian institutions to assist with research travel outside North America. Recipients are required to present their research at an NACBS conference within three years. This opportunity fosters scholarly engagement and contributes to the field of British studies.

The NACBS sponsors a scholarly journal, the Journal of British Studies, online publications, an annual conference, as well as several academic prizes, graduate fellowships, and undergraduate essay contests.
Recipients of the NACBS pre-dissertation fellowship are expected to propose a paper based on their research to either the national or a regional conference of the NACBS within three years of holding the fellowship.
