Overview

Association for Women Geoscientists The Association for Women Geoscientists (AWG) is a global organization devoted to enhancing the quality and level of participation of women in geosciences and to introduce girls and young women to geoscience careers. Membership is open to anyone who supports AWG's goals. Our members include: professionals from industry, government, museums, academia, and K-12 teachers; students; retirees; and others interested in supporting our goals. Our diverse interests and expertise cover the entire spectrum of geoscience disciplines and career paths, providing excellent networking and mentoring opportunities. AWG Mid-Career Excellence Award The AWG Mid-Career Excellence Award is given annually in recognition of an outstanding mid-career woman scientist. Recognizing that contributions vary for different career paths, we invite nominations in one of three categories: academia, industry, and government. Up to three awards, one in each category, may be given each year. We define mid-career as the professional stage demonstrating earned experience and expertise with the expectation of many years remaining to gain experience, advance qualifications and pursue leadership roles. This approximates to 7 to 20 years of professional experience. Nominees will be evaluated based on the impact and breadth of scientific contribution and their outstanding community service. Nominations are solicited from the AWG membership and from the geoscience community at large. Examples of the candidate’s impact and breadth of scientific contribution may include, but are not limited to: Candidate’s body of work demonstrates new ideas for data acquisition, analytical methods, and/ or scientific approaches or syntheses.Overall scientific impact of a candidate’s work to her specific career path (academia, industry, or government). In recognition of the non-disclosure limitation that nominees from industry and government may face, the overall scientific impact can be exhibited in the nominee’s general project categories. Examples of outstanding community service include, but are not limited to: Application of candidate’s expertise through participation and service to organizations, museums, and/or science centers;Exceptional service relevant to professional activities;Exceptional mentoring with students and/or colleagues;Significant contributions in informal roles “behind the scenes” and/or formal roles;Significant contributions to community outreach, for example, providing materials for K-12 students or teachers, and communication for general audiences
