Let's Talk About It

Program Type: Community book discussion program

Description: Since 1985, Oklahoma Humanities has strengthened communities by connecting Oklahomans through its dynamic book club program. Literature is a catalyst for meaningful conversations, encouraging readers to reflect on their experiences, share thoughts and ideas, consider diverse perspectives, and gain new insight.

Geographic Scope: Oklahoma statewide

Eligibility:

  • Nonprofit organizations

  • Open to all community members to attend (free and open to public)
  • What the Grant Covers:

  • Planning guide

  • Directory of participating literary experts

  • Grant of up to $1,500 to cover speaker honoraria and mileage

  • Educational essays providing background and context for selected themes

  • Multiple copies of books to be borrowed by program participants
  • Host Responsibilities:

  • Organizing and promoting the series

  • Accounting for grant expenditures

  • Monitoring circulation of books

  • Reporting on program outcomes

  • Adhering to Oklahoma Humanities branding requirements and logo usage guidelines

  • Joining with community partners to strengthen programs
  • Program Structure:

  • Each series includes 4-5 pre-selected books examining a single theme from multiple perspectives

  • Each program begins with a literary expert giving a 30-40 minute talk

  • Followed by community discussion

  • Themes include: food traditions and culture, coming of age stories, Oklahoma history, ethnic diversity, finding hope during difficult times
  • Recent Format (Fall 2025):

  • Abridged version offered with one program discussing one book instead of full series
  • Program Schedule:

  • Spring Season: Book reservations Jul. 1 – Nov. 1; Online applications Sept. 1 – Nov. 1; Programs Jan. 1 – Jun. 30

  • Fall Season: Book reservations Jan. 1 – May 1; Online applications Mar. 1 – May 1; Programs Jul. 1 – Dec. 31

    Application Process

    1. Contact Rayne McKinney to reserve books for your series (must complete before online application)
    2. Complete the online grant application once books are reserved
    3. Application Timeline:
    - Spring programs: Book reservations Jul. 1 – Nov. 1; Online application submissions Sept. 1 – Nov. 1
    - Fall programs: Book reservations Jan. 1 – May 1; Online application submissions Mar. 1 – May 1
