Overview

Lepidoptera Conservation Grant

Status: The 2025-26 grant cycle is now closed

Overview: Grant supporting research and conservation of butterflies and moths as pollinators. There are estimated to be up to 20,000 species of butterflies worldwide and approximately 190,000 species of moths globally. Both provide pollination and ecosystem services of a diverse variety.

Focus Areas:

  • Building knowledge and understanding of the crucial role of Lepidoptera in ecosystems

  • Understanding the role of butterflies and moths as pollinators (largely unknown compared to bees)

  • Research on shifts in diet and function across Lepidoptera life cycles

  • Relationships with specific plants and habitat elements
  • Background: Although the beauty and complexity of these animals captures people's imaginations and encourages actions to help protect them, the role of these species as pollinators is largely unknown. Unlike the life cycles of bee species, Lepidoptera species experience significant shifts in diet and function throughout their development.
