Overview

Leola Clark Scholarship

Overview: Need-based general scholarship available to high school seniors who are residents of Linn County, honoring a legacy of community investment and empowerment.

Geographic Scope: Linn County, Iowa

Award Details:

  • Minimum of $1,000 per year

  • 1-3 scholarships available annually

  • Awarded for 4 years upon receipt of proof of enrollment and continued good standing each year following the first
  • Eligibility:

  • Must be a high school senior graduating during the current school year

  • Must be a resident of Linn County

  • Must have demonstrated need based on life circumstances

  • Must be pursuing post-secondary education in an accredited college, university, community college, or vocational or technical school (not including continuing education)
  • History: Originated from a gift by Leola Z. Clark, a long-time member of St. Paul's UMC and pioneer in the insurance business in Cedar Rapids. Mrs. Clark left high school, earned her GED, and became one of the first female underwriters. She established this scholarship to assist graduates with college plans. Leola passed away in 2009 at age 103.

    Selection: Award committee of St. Paul's UMC members

    Notification: All applicants notified no later than the last Friday in May each year

    Payment: Made directly to the educational institution

    2. Submit all supporting documentation
    3. Deadline: Application and all supporting documentation must be postmarked or received no later than April 15 each year
    4. Submit to St. Paul's United Methodist Church Foundation
