Justice Janie L. Shores Scholarship

Purpose: Established in 2006 by the Women's Section of the Alabama State Bar and the Alabama Law Foundation to support female law students and honor the legacy of Alabama's first female Supreme Court Justice.

Named After: Justice Janie L. Shores, the first female Alabama Supreme Court Justice, elected in 1974, retired in 1999, and died in 2017.

Geographic Scope: Alabama residents only

Eligibility:

  • Must be female

  • Must be Alabama resident

  • Must be attending an Alabama law school

  • Must be full-time law student
  • Award Details:

  • Award amounts have ranged from $4,750 to $6,500 (based on available years: 2015: $4,750; 2016: $5,100; 2019: $6,500)

  • Awards determined annually by scholarship committee

  • Recipient recognized at the Maude McLure Kelly Award Luncheon during Alabama State Bar Annual Meeting
  • Selection Process:

  • Awarded by scholarship committee of the Women's Section of the Alabama State Bar

  • Committee considers academic achievement, community service, commitment to the legal profession, and dedication to helping underserved populations
