Overview

Kid's Chance Scholarship

Purpose: Provides scholarships to students whose parent(s) have been permanently and totally disabled or killed as a result of a work-related injury.

Geographic Scope: Alabama residents only

Eligibility:

  • Student must be an Alabama resident

  • Parent must have been found permanently and totally disabled from an on-the-job injury, OR

  • Parent must have been killed as a result of an on-the-job injury

  • Applicant must be attending or planning to attend a technical school or college
  • Award Details:

  • Scholarships traditionally range from $500 to $3,000

  • No scholarship will exceed the annual cost of tuition and books at the most expensive in-state public university

  • Award amounts are determined by the Scholarship Committee

  • Scholarships awarded in late June or early July
  • Required Documentation:

  • High school transcript of grades (not needed if already graduated from high school and attending college)

  • College or technical school transcripts if currently enrolled

  • Copy of financial aid letter from school attending

  • Letters of recommendation (optional)

  • Proof that parent has been found permanently and totally disabled from an on-the-job injury (copy of court order or statement from workers' compensation insurance carrier)

  • Death certificate of deceased parent (if applicable) - death must have resulted from an on-the-job injury

  • Brief description of the accident

  • Copy of last year's tax return of parent or guardian

    Application Process

    Deadline: May 1 each year (applications must be received by this date; no late applications accepted)

    Application Steps:
    1. Complete the online application form with all required information
    2. Gather all required supporting documents
    3. Print and sign the Certification of Authorization form (provided after online submission)
    4. Mail signed Certification and supporting documents to the address below

  • Information about injured or deceased parent (name, date of injury/death, employer, workers' compensation insurance carrier)

  • Career objectives

  • Plans for financing education (sources and amounts)

  • Living arrangements (home vs. on-campus)

  • Employment during school year (if applicable)

  • Household income details (monthly average workers' compensation payment, disability insurance income, other income sources)

  • Household assets (cash, stocks, bonds, real estate, automobiles, other property)

  • Household liabilities (mortgages, loans, other bills)

  • Additional circumstances relevant to scholarship request
