Jose Solarez Scholarship

Overview: A scholarship program created to help youth in Guadalupe, Arizona stay in school, named after Jose Solarez, a founding and long-time ABC Board member who passed away in 2012.

Geographic Scope: Guadalupe, Arizona

Focus Areas:

  • Educational support for youth (pre-school through 12th grade)

  • Guidance and tutoring

  • Basic needs assistance (shoes, clothes, hygiene items, school supplies)
  • Current Goal: Raise $5,000 annually for scholarships (raised $5,885 in previous year)

    Partner Organization: Flight 33 organization administers the scholarship funds and serves 250-300 students annually

    Matching Challenge: Anonymous donor provides $2,500 matching challenge - 100% of donations up to $2,500 will be matched dollar-for-dollar

  • Background: Jose Solarez was a founding member of ABC and the Arizona Foundation for Behavioral Health. He graduated from Arizona State University with a Bachelor's degree in secondary education in Native American and Chicano Studies. He held positions including Gila River Indian Community Community Service Director, Tribal Manager for Pascua Yaqui, Town Manager for Cities of El Mirage, San Luis, and Guadalupe, and Municipal Judge for Guadalupe.
