Summary
The John Wells Memorial Scholarship, established by the Muskingum County Community Foundation, honors the legacy of John Wells, a dedicated pitching coach. This one-time, non-renewable scholarship supports outstanding female softball players from a six-county area pursuing higher education. Candidates must demonstrate exceptional athletic involvement and commitment to academic success. The scholarship aims to provide financial assistance for tuition, room, and other educational expenses, continuing John's mission of empowering young athletes.Overview
Mission & Vision The Mission of the Muskingum County Community Foundation is to improve quality of life in the community by nurturing opportunities and serving needs through collaboration and philanthropy. The Envisioned Future of the Muskingum County Community Foundation is that Muskingum County’s quality of life attracts organizations and people to pursue their dreams and practice their passions. In 1985, civic leaders in the area established the Zanesville Development Corporation to generate ideas to enhance the quality of life in Zanesville. The corporation suggested three projects: formation of a community leadership program, an enhanced economic corridor along Interstate 70, and the establishment of a community foundation. John Wells Memorial Scholarship The John Wells Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of John Wells, who was the pitching coach at Muskingum University for 14 years, where he produced several All-Conference performers as well as two All-Americans. He was also the pitching coach for John Glenn High School where he produced many All-MVL performers and Three All-Ohio pitchers. John always gave his time freely to help young ladies who wanted to improve their softball skills. This scholarship is a way to allow John to continue to help young softball players to reach their goals. John died while pitching batting practice to the Muskingum team at the Division III World Series in Eau Claire, Wisconsin in 2001. Three days later, the Muskies brought home their first and only National Championship trophy. The purpose is to financially assist students pursuing a higher education. We are seeking individuals who have demonstrated outstanding athletic involvement during their education and exhibit the ability to succeed in completing their higher education. The one time, non-renewable scholarship will be given to outstanding female softball players/managers who are graduates of schools in a six-county area including Muskingum, Guernsey, Noble, Perry, Morgan and Coshocton. A check will be sent directly to the chosen institution and can be used for room, board, tuition, books, lab fees or other incidental costs.Eligibility
