Overview

Joan M. Mills Award

Organization: APTA Geriatrics (Academy of Geriatric Physical Therapy)

Purpose: Seeks to recognize a APTA Geriatric Member who has given outstanding service to the Academy of Geriatric Physical Therapy.

Award Background: Established in 1980 in honor of Joan M. Mills, APTA Geriatrics' first President. Joan Mills' vision, determination, and dedication united physical therapists caring for geriatric patients in their commitment to excellence in the delivery of physical therapy to aging adults. Her leadership and participation led to the growth and development of APTA Geriatrics and new leaders.

Award Focus: Recognizes a member who has followed in Joan Mills' footsteps, generously contributing their time, talents, and efforts to the development of the Academy.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Current Membership: Must be a current member of APTA Geriatrics
  • Active Participation: Must have actively participated in APTA Geriatrics activities
  • Time Commitment: Must have given generously and willingly of time and effort for a minimum of 3 years
  • Field Experience: Must have been engaged in the field of gerontology/geriatrics for a minimum of 5 years
  • Leadership Roles: Must have served as:
  • - Volunteer member or leader - Member of the Geriatric Specialty Council - Voting member of the APTA Geriatrics Board of Directors
  • Demonstrated Service: Must have demonstrated valuable service to APTA Geriatrics through areas of:
  • - Leadership - Personal influence - Achievement - Frequent and sustained work to support the Academy

Nomination Process

Nominator Requirement: A current member of APTA Geriatrics must nominate the individual.

Submission Format: All required materials must be submitted as ONE PDF document

Required Materials:

1. Letter of Nomination
- Addressed to the Awards Committee
- Describe how and why the nominee meets the criteria

2. Resume or CV
- Copy of nominee's current resume or curriculum vitae

Timeline:

  • August: Accepting nominations

  • October: Deadline to submit nominations

  • December: Awardees selected and notifications sent

  • February: Recognition at APTA Combined Sections Meeting
