Overview

Japan Foundation The Japan Foundation was established in 1972 by special legislation in the Japanese Diet and became an Independent Administrative Institution in October 2003. The mission of the Japan Foundation is to promote international cultural exchange and mutual understanding between Japan and other countries. The Foundation maintains its headquarters in Tokyo and operates through a network of 26 overseas offices in 25 countries worldwide. The Japan Foundation is represented by two offices in the United States—one in New York and the other in Los Angeles. Japanese Studies Fellowship Programs Purpose In order to promote Japanese Studies overseas, this program provides support to outstanding scholars in the field by providing the opportunity to conduct research in Japan. Funding opportunity: Projects must be in the humanities, social sciences, and/or comparative research Benefits: Includes airfare, certificate of health, insurance, settling-in and departure allowances, monthly stipend, dependent allowance and insurance, and enrollment fees (may vary depending on program) Research Fellowship (Long-Term) For extended period of research projects. More than 4 months, up to 12 months in length. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent professional experience. Higher priority will be given to relatively junior scholars and researchers, and to those with less research experience in Japan.
