Support Program for Translation and Publication on Japan Grant

The Support Program for Translation and Publication on Japan offers financial assistance to overseas publishers for translating and publishing Japanese works. It covers part of costs incurred between April 1, 2026, and February 28, 2027, including translation fees and publication expenses. Eligible costs include paper, typesetting, and printing, but do not cover editing or copyright fees. The goal is to enhance global understanding of Japan through literature.

This program is designed to provide partial financial support for overseas publishers intending to translate and publish works originally written in Japanese. The program aims to foster better understanding of Japan by encouraging overseas publishers to translate and publish Japanese works. The grant covers part of the translation and publication costs (e.g. costs for paper, typesetting, platemaking, printing, and binding).
Grant Coverage
Part of the following costs paid between April 1, 2026, and February 28, 2027
Translation fee (paid to a translator by an applicant);
Publication costs such as costs for paper, typesetting/platemaking, printing, and binding; paid to printing companies.Copies of the contract between the translator(s) and applicant, as well as estimates for the costs that the applicant intends to cover by the grant, from the printing or other companies, will be required at the time of application. Any expenses paid before April 1, 2026, are not applicable. The grant shall cover part of the translation cost and part of the publication costs mentioned above.Costs for editing, acquisition of translation rights, copyright clearance, proofreading, and other in-house expenses are not applicable.Grant payments will be made after the completion of translation and/or publication.
The grant should not cover any part of the project expense(s) funded by other organizations.
