NOTE: For online projects, applications are accepted on a rolling basis and must be received by JFNY at least 1 month prior to the project start date. For other projects, applications must be submitted at least 3 months prior to the beginning date of the grant period. JFNY Grant For Japanese Studies Grant type: Post-paid grant Funding opportunity: Institutional funding for U.S.-based institutions/organizations with 501(c)(3) status Funding maximum: $5,000 This grant aims to support projects that will enhance further understanding of Japan through academic exploration. Such projects generally take the form of conferences, colloquia, symposia, presentations, and lectures within the United States as well as in virtual format. Successful projects are awarded up to $5,000. Priority will be given to those projects that have secured additional funding from sources other than the Japan Foundation. Grant Coverage Honoraria for speakers, participants, etc. Domestic/international travel expenses for speakers, participants, etc. Accommodation expenses (including per diem) for speakers, participants, etc. Research materials Printing costs of programs, leaflets, catalogs Online-related costs (e.g. creating online contents, digitizing and/or photographing cataloging books and other materials, etc.) Rental fees for venues and equipment (Note: The Japan Foundation cannot cover rental fees for facilities within the applying institution.) Please note: The applicant should cover costs for any receptions, if applicable. In most cases, the grant will be paid in the form of a reimbursement for preceding expenses, and the award money will be remitted upon receipt of the final report and the appropriate proofs of payments.

Ineligibility

The Japan Foundation cannot cover rental fees for facilities within the applying institution.JFNY will not consider proposals from or for the following:Individuals and for-profit entitiesProjects that have already received funding through other Japan Foundation grants in the current fiscal yearIn principle, organizations that have received a JFNY Grant for Japanese Studies for three consecutive years, ending in the 2021-2022 fiscal yearJapanese-language education programs.
