Indigenous Leaders in Governance (ILG) Program

Overview: A program developed in response to feedback from elected Tribal leaders, offering education and technical assistance for new and seasoned elected leaders to strengthen Tribal governance and develop onboarding/orientation programs.

Target Audience:

  • Elected Tribal leaders (new and seasoned)

  • Tribal administrators

  • Native nations seeking governance capacity building
  • Program Components:

      Virtual Workshop Series

    • Four live virtual workshops featuring presentations, guest speakers, activities, and reflection
    • Customizable to fit nations' specific needs and interests
    • Topics include:
    • - Traditional Indigenous Leadership and Governance - Native Nation Rebuilding Philosophy - Today's Tribal Governance - Tribal, State, and Federal Relations

      Technical Assistance

    • Available after nations complete workshop series
    • Support for developing and implementing orientation and onboarding programs
    • Helps strengthen sovereignty through sustainable leadership training

    Focus: Making concepts accessible and highlighting practical implementation approaches for strengthening Tribal leadership and governance

    Eligibility: Interested Native nations and their elected leadership/administrators

    Application Process:
    1. Complete short service request form
    2. NGC will reach out with more information
    3. Program can be customized based on nation's needs

    Required Commitment:

  • Completion of four virtual workshop series

  • Subsequent technical assistance participation for onboarding program development
