Background: Established in response to the personal experience of Annette Stoddard-Freeman, who faced financial barriers when returning to college after her husband's death to support her five children. The scholarship was created to address the lack of financial support available to women in later stages of their lives seeking to return to education.
History: The first HER Scholarship was awarded in 1996 in the amount of $750. The scholarship amount has grown to $3,000 as of the time of the referenced article. As of the referenced article, 81 women have graduated from college through the program.
