GreenTRIP Certification Program

GreenTRIP Certification is a third-party evaluation and support program for residential and mixed-use development projects that apply strategies to reduce vehicle trips, excessive parking, and greenhouse gas emissions while making transportation more affordable.

Geographic Scope: Nine-county San Francisco Bay Area: San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Alameda, Contra Costa, Napa, Solano, Sonoma, and Marin Counties. Projects must be within urban growth boundaries.

Focus Areas:

• Reduce driving and vehicle miles traveled (VMT)
• Reduce greenhouse gas emissions from residential development
• Right-sized parking strategies
• Traffic reduction strategies (free transit passes, car-sharing access, unbundled parking from rent)
• Climate-resilient residential and mixed-use development

Eligibility Requirements:

• Multi-family housing with some mixed-use allowed
• Project density: at least 20 units/acre
• Resident bike parking: at least one space per unit
• Guest bike parking for 20% of units
• Annual transportation and parking survey administered
• Within urban growth boundaries
• Within the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area

What They Don't Fund: This is a certification/evaluation program, not a grant program. An evaluation fee is required from accepted applicants.

GreenTRIP Certification Application Process

Step-by-Step Process:

1. Initial Contact: Reach out to the GreenTRIP team at [email protected]
2. Introductory Phone Call: Team will learn more about your project and assess preliminary eligibility
3. Acceptance Decision: If accepted for certification, Transform will request full application materials and evaluation fee
4. Kick-Off Meeting: Set up meeting with project team to discuss:
   • Project details
   • Timeline for certification steps
   • Potential traffic reduction strategies
   • Examples of similar projects implementing these strategies
5. Ongoing Support: Transform provides data collection, transportation modeling, and communications materials
6. Annual Survey: Administer annual transportation and parking survey

Minimum Eligibility Requirements to Apply:

• Multi-family housing (with some mixed-use)
• At least 20 units/acre density
• At least one resident bike parking space per unit
• Guest bike parking for 20% of units
• Location within nine-county Bay Area and urban growth boundaries
