Grant Program Overview

Funder: Variety – the Children's Charity of Iowa

Geographic Scope: Iowa statewide

Mission Focus: Funding for nonprofit organizations that deliver care, treatment, activities, and shelter to children who are at-risk, underprivileged, critically ill, and living with special needs.

Funding Focus

Variety primarily funds brick and mortar projects, equipment, and other tangible items that directly impact children.

What IS Funded:

Building expansions and renovations

Equipment

Program-related tangible items

What IS NOT Funded:

Administrative needs (staffing, salaries, office space, etc.)

Grant Categories

1. Essential Health & Wellness (formerly Acute & Convalescent)
- Nonprofits providing critical care including neonatal, pediatrics, and mental health services
- Child essentials and family support
- Focus areas: Critical health care/medical equipment, mental health services, specialized therapy, child and family support essentials

2. Pathways to Success (formerly Preventative and Youth At Risk)
- Nonprofits serving children lacking social or educational opportunities
- Children who experienced physical or chemical abuse, behavior problems, or need emergency shelter
- Focus areas: Job readiness/personal development, educational support, accessible support programs

3. Access, Independence, and Inclusion (formerly Camperships, Variety at Work, and Underprivileged)
- Nonprofits providing services, spaces, or programs to children who are critically ill, living with special needs, or lacking access due to poverty
- Focus areas: Inclusive experiences, adaptive/inclusive spaces, camps (equipment/supplies/tangible items), transportation

Application Process

Grant applicants are reviewed for financial stability, and each organization is interviewed by a member of Variety's board to ensure understanding of the specific request and potential impact.

Prior year recipients available: 2025, 2024, 2023, 2022, 2021

Reporting Requirements

Grant recipients are required to complete and submit reporting forms by stated deadline in grant agreement.
