Overview

Purpose To promote continuing education in the medical field and skills training at any trade school by awarding scholarships to a deserving student or graduate in the John Randolph Foundation service area interested in pursuing a degree in the medical field or to learn a trade from any trade school. Applicants must demonstrate academic achievement, an active record of community service and strong work experience. Background The Glen W. and Virginia R. Butler Memorial Scholarship Endowment was established in memory of their children: Bill Butler, Judy Thomas, and Cindy Partin and grandchildren: David Thomas, Johnny Partin, and Allison Partin. Glen W. Butler was born June 7, 1922. With only a 7th grade education, Glen dropped out of school to go to work with his step father as a carpenter. At the age of 17, Glen enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served throughout WWII and was a part of every major naval action. Around 1947, he transitioned into the United States Air Force, where he retired as a Master Sergeant with over 20 years of service in the Navy and Air Force combined. After his retirement, Glen and his wife Virginia moved to Hopewell, while they built their house in Enon. Glen Butler took a job as a Forman/Supervisor at Allied Chemical (now Honeywell), where he retired after 20 years of service to the plant. Virginia R. Butler was born on May 3, 1922 in Charles City County. She was raised in Hopewell and graduated from Hopewell High School in the early 1940s. Upon graduation she attended and graduated from Mount Sinai Nursing School. She commissioned into the United States Army as an officer and nurse. She was stationed in Japan, where she met, fell in love, and ultimately married Glen Butler. She was promoted to the rank of Captain but had to resign her commission when she became pregnant. After Glen retired from the Air Force, they moved to Hopewell, while they built their house in Enon. Virginia took a job at John Randolph Hospital where she served as the head nurse for over 30 years. After her retirement from John Randolph Hospital, she became very active with the West End Presbyterian Church and Rivermont Presbyterian Church. Through this scholarship, the legacy of Glen and Virginia Butler and their firm belief in getting a good quality education and/or trade, will be shared for generations to come by assisting students and young adults with their educational and/or trade skill endeavors. Glen and Virginia stressed the importance of getting a good quality education and/or a strong trade/skill set to their children, grandchildren and any one else they hoped to encourage and influence. This scholarship will allow Glen’s and Virginia’s legacy to live on. Criteria Scoring (15 Points) Academics(10 Points) Work Experience(5 Points) Community Service(20 Points) Attending or planning to attend VMI(5 Points) Planning to enter the medical field(5 Points) Statement & Essay Procedure The scholarship will be paid directly to the school for current year tuition, fees, books purchased through the institution attended, and on-campus dormitory and meal plan expenses. The scholarship committee will review and evaluate all applications and announce awards each spring. The committee will also review and revise the scholarship policy and criteria as necessary. Note: One scholarship will be awarded to a student pursuing a degree in the medical field and One scholarship will be awarded to a student pursuing a trade or skill. Butler Memorial Scholarship Endowment. The John Randolph Foundation Scholarship Committee reserves the right to interview applicants in the final stages of selection. The decision of the scholarship committee in all matters regarding scholarships is final. Canvassing a scholarship benefactor, any John Randolph Foundation trustee or employee shall result in immediate disqualification. Scholarship awards are subject to the availability of funds, meeting the criteria as outlined in the guidelines of the individual scholarship program and contingent upon acceptance and enrollment in an approved program. This scholarship will be available to seniors or graduates of either Hopewell High School, Prince George High School, Thomas Dale High School or Maggie Walker & Appomattox Regional Governor’s School (whose home school would have been one of the above mentioned high schools). This is a merit based scholarship. Students may continue to reapply for this scholarship as they continue through their educational experience. However, receipt of this scholarship does not guarantee future awards.Scholarship Applicants MustCandidates for the Glen W. and Virginia R. Butler Memorial Scholarship Endowment must be a student who best exemplifies academic achievement, a great record of community service, and strong work experience. Candidates will also be expected to meet the following minimum criteria:Available for undergraduate, graduate, terminal degree and professional education with interest in pursuing a degree in the medical field or to learn a trade/skill set;Demonstrate academic success, a great record of community service, and strong work experience.Submit a completed John Randolph Foundation Scholarship Application online;Must have a G.P.A of 2.75 or higher on a 4.0 scale (exceptions allowed for extraordinary circumstances or extenuating reasons).
