Georgetown Promise Scholarship

Overview: The Georgetown Promise Scholarship (GPS) is designed to financially assist Georgetown students to enhance access and educational opportunities for students who identify as Black/African-American or Latino(a). The scholarship provides financial assistance for tuition, fees, books, vocational and technical training.

Award Types

Tuition, Fees & Books:

  • Up to $2,500 per year for students pursuing a college or university degree

  • May be renewed for up to one additional year if student demonstrates academic advancement and financial need
  • Vocational/Technical:

  • Up to $2,500 per year for students pursuing vocational degrees or technical certifications

  • May be renewed for up to one additional year if student demonstrates academic advancement and financial need

  • Award covers one academic year (Fall semester to Spring semester or equivalent)
  • Eligibility Requirements

    Applicants must:

  • Be a student of color (Black/African-American or Latino(a))

  • Be a resident of Georgetown, Texas

  • Be registered as a full-time, first-year student at an accredited institution of higher education (part-time consideration available)

  • Have a minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale

  • Apply by April 15 of the year graduating from high school or within 10 months after high school graduation
  • Conditions of Scholarship

    Recipients must:

  • Maintain full-time student status (12 credit hours per semester) or be registered as part-time students

  • Remain in good academic standing with minimum GPA of 2.5

  • Failure to meet conditions may result in discontinuance of the award
  • Renewal Process

    Students wishing to renew must:

  • Submit renewal letter by April 15 each year indicating desire to renew

  • Include information about continued attendance and program of study

  • Submit by June 30 of graduation year:

  • - Copy of class schedule for Fall (showing number of hours enrolled)
    - Unofficial transcript showing minimum 2.5 GPA and completion of 12 hours per semester

    How to Apply

    Application Process

    1. Complete the Georgetown Promise Scholarship Application Form

    2. Submit Required Documents:
    - Personal essay (no more than 2 pages)
    - Unofficial transcript of all grades
    - Current resume
    - Two letters of recommendation

    3. Essay Requirements:
    Address the following in your essay (max 2 pages):
    - How the scholarship will help you achieve desired goals in your academic field or vocational/training program
    - Ways you will contribute to the greater community
    - Impact of obstacles, if any, that have prevented accomplishment of academic and career goals
    - Impact of family life (e.g., number of children in family; highest level of education reached by family members)
    - If employed: number of hours per week working and elaboration on need to continue working while attending higher education

    4. Letters of Recommendation:
    - Two letters required from:
    - A high school faculty or administrative staff member who has known you longer than one semester and can address academic performance and campus involvement, OR
    - A non-relative who has known you for longer than one year and can evaluate your professional or scholastic ability

    5. Selection Criteria:
    - Essay statement, academic record, and reference letters are primary selection criteria
    - Priority given to applicants based on:
    - Financial need
    - Obstacles that have been barriers to achieving academic and professional achievement
    - Socioeconomic background
    - Cultural heritage
    - Race and ethnicity
    - Extracurricular activities
    - Community service
    - Work experience

    6. Interview:
    - Qualifying candidates will be contacted to participate in an interview (in person or via Zoom)

    7. Notification:
    - Applicants will be notified by May 15

    8. Award Disbursement:
    - Scholarship award will be paid directly to the institution of higher learning

    9. Public Announcement:
    - Awardees will be requested to email a photograph (e.g., senior photograph) for public announcement and recognition
