George Bereday Annual Best CER Article Award

Purpose: Recognizes the best article published in the Comparative Education Review for its importance in shaping the field, analytic merit, policy implications, theoretical constructs, and implications for future research.

Established: 1980 (renamed in 1989 to honor George Bereday)

    Eligibility

  • Only full-length articles may be considered
  • Articles must be published in Comparative Education Review during the preceding year
  • Not eligible: Editorials, addresses, book reviews, country reports, bibliographical reports
  • Exception: Essay reviews of exceptional merit may be considered in extraordinary cases

    Selection Criteria

  • Strength of theoretical framework
  • Sophistication and/or innovativeness of methodology
  • Soundness of data collection procedures and analysis
  • Social utility and implications for public policy
  • Unique contribution to field development

    Additional Evaluation Criteria

  • Effective integration of within-education focus and education-in-societal-context
  • Effective use of relevant literature
  • Evidence of critical and self-critical approach to theory and method
  • Likelihood to advance important debate within comparative education

    Recognition

  • Recipient honored at upcoming Annual Meeting of CIES

Selection Process

1. Subcommittee reviews all CER articles from preceding year 2. Each member submits rank-ordered list of three nominees 3. Bereday Award Chair creates final list of 3-5 nominated articles 4. Subcommittee reviews final list and votes
