Chapin Foundation Grant Program

Funder: Chapin Foundation of Myrtle Beach, SC

Background: Established in 1943 by Simeon B. Chapin to provide visionary grant making within Myrtle Beach and a one-mile radius.

Geographic Scope: Organizations must be located within the city limits of Myrtle Beach or within a one-mile radius.

Five Focus Areas:
1. Churches - Local, regularly organized religious institutions may apply for grants to aid in specific church needs as well as to support their local and foreign missions.
2. Church-Sponsored Non-Profits - Non-profit organizations that hold a 501(c)(3) designation by the IRS and are sponsored by a regularly organized religious institution.
3. YMCA - The permanent branch of the YMCA in Myrtle Beach (Claire Chapin Epps Family YMCA, located off 62nd Avenue North and 17 Bypass).
4. Public Libraries - The Chapin Memorial Library and school libraries located within the city limits of Myrtle Beach or within a one-mile radius.
5. Public Healthcare Providers - Organizations that provide a variety of health care services to people in need or in crisis.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Non-profit organizations must be identified and sponsored by a church or other regularly organized religious institution located within one mile of the city limits of Myrtle Beach

  • Must have 501(c)(3) status

  • Must fall into one of the five focus areas

  • Must be located within city limits of Myrtle Beach or one-mile radius
  • What the Foundation Does NOT Fund:

  • Individuals

  • Indirect costs, including payments of a percentage of a grant to a local organization's national affiliate

  • Programs or projects generally considered to be the role of the government

  • Endowments

  • Loans

  • Retirement of accumulated debt

  • Projects of organizations that primarily benefit their own members or adherents

  • Tickets to charitable events or dinners

  • Legislative lobbying or other political purposes

    Step 1: Submit Letter of Inquiry (LOI)

  • LOI deadlines are on the first day of each quarter: January 1, April 1, July 1, and October 1

  • Grant-making decisions are made by the Chapin Foundation Board of Advisors during March, June, September, and December
  • LOI Requirements:
    1. Non-profit organizations must be identified and sponsored by a church or other regularly organized religious institution located within one mile of the city limits of Myrtle Beach
    2. Must include proof of 501(c)(3) status
    3. Must include a brief description of the project or program
    4. Applicant will be notified by the foundation if the LOI has been approved or denied

    Step 2: Full Application (if LOI approved)

  • If LOI is approved, applicant will be assigned a deadline to complete the full application
  • Step 3: Site Visit

  • As part of the grant-making process, the Chapin Foundation will request a site visit with organizations that have been approved for the online grant application process

  • Site visits allow the foundation to meet with key members of staff and board

  • Organizations have the opportunity to showcase their mission and methods in their home base setting
