Gateway Wellness Foundation Annual Grant Program

Geographic Scope: Burke, McDowell, Polk, and Rutherford Counties, North Carolina

Mission: Through intentional partnerships and collaborations, Gateway Wellness Foundation invests in programs, initiatives, and organizations that promise to improve the health and well-being of residents and address social determinants of health in western North Carolina.

Focus Areas

Gateway invites proposals focusing on:

  • Access to Health Care: Increasing access to healthcare including mental and behavioral health care support and services; reducing disparities in access to healthcare
  • Childhood Development: Nurturing emotional, social, and/or physical development of children; evidence-based strategies for early childhood programs supporting healthy child and family development
  • Education: Increasing children's developmental readiness for school; increasing high school graduation rates; mentoring and after-school programs; expanding Career and Technical Education (CTE) opportunities; enhancing student learning success
  • Housing: Education about home purchasing and maintenance; removing barriers to homeownership; home repair or rehabilitation; senior housing access; transitional, emergency housing or shelter
  • Food Insecurity: Measurably decreasing food insecurity and increasing availability of healthy food
  • Special Projects: Job creation and readiness, centralized case management coordination, capacity building, substance use disorder, community hardship mitigation

Critical Funding Needs Focus Areas

Through community surveying and strategic planning, the board prioritizes:

  • Poverty (child poverty, poverty cycles, disabled individuals in poverty, impoverished individuals under 65)

  • Education (language and literacy advocacy, high school graduation and retention, early childhood instruction)

  • Food Security (child hunger, food access, food deserts, community food partnerships)
  • Eligibility

    Eligible Applicants:

  • Nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations

  • Governmental entities

  • Must serve residents of Burke, McDowell, Polk, and/or Rutherford Counties
  • Cannot Fund:

  • Individuals

  • Political purposes, including lobbying

  • Out-of-area projects

  • Grants prohibited by IRS regulations
  • Award Information

    Funding Guidance:

  • No official minimum or maximum request amount

  • Requests over $50,000 are very rarely approved

  • Few requests above $30,000 will be fully funded

  • Applicants with projects requiring amounts exceeding $30,000 should contact grants staff in advance
