Garden-Scale Art Exhibition

Status: Ongoing

Geographic Scope: Open to artists internationally; no residency requirement, though travel stipend not available

Focus Areas: Garden-scale outdoor art installations for exhibition in the botanical garden setting. Media need not be visual but must be ongoing (visible, audible, tactile, or otherwise experiential throughout display period).

Award Details:

  • Commission structure: ABG assumes 30% commission on salable pieces

  • Salable pieces encouraged but not required

  • Artist or appointed representative must be present for installation
  • Duration Options:

  • Minimum 2 months

  • Maximum 12 months

  • Winter-based pieces may require season-long stay (mid-November through mid-April)
  • Location: Designated sites within established perennial garden beds, surrounded by plant material and not accessible by public. Alternative public-interactive placements available upon discussion.

    Requirements:

  • Outdoor placement only

  • Preference for natural, sustainable, and/or reclaimed materials

  • Must withstand wind, rain, ice, snow, and wildlife (squirrels, porcupines, birds, bears)

  • Original and appropriate for public, family-friendly viewing

  • Artists encouraged to offer public engagement (talks, workshops, etc.)
  • Eligibility:

  • Preference given to artists with demonstrable record of public or outdoor installations

  • No Alaska residency required
  • What ABG Provides:

  • Professional signage creation

  • Winter lighting for winter installations (if desired/appropriate)

  • Exposure and promotion: ~50,000 garden visitors annually promoted through radio, newspaper, magazine ads, website, social media, on-site flyers

  • Installation assistance
  • Liability: ABG not responsible for damage or breakage despite care taken

    Submission Process

    1. Complete the Garden-Scale Submission Form
    2. Submissions accepted on an ongoing basis (rolling application)
    3. Include site preferences and duration of exhibition
    4. Describe materials and outdoor durability features
    5. Outline any proposed public engagement opportunities

    Installation: ABG staff available to assist; artist or designated representative must be present for installation process.
