Overview

Gallon Grad Program

Funder: Community Blood Center Inc (WI, US)

Overview: A unique program for high school blood donors that is about more than just blood donation. It encourages students to help others understand why blood donation is important and to encourage others to make it a lifesaving habit. The program is both a first step in creating lifelong passion for blood donation and an opportunity to reward high school students who play a critical role in supporting their local community.

    Geographic Scope

  • Available to students enrolled at CBC partner high schools in Wisconsin, Illinois, and Michigan

    Eligibility

  • High school students enrolled at one of CBC's partner high schools
  • Must complete two of the specified requirements over the course of high school career
  • Students may complete the donate and recruit requirement twice

    Awards/Recognition

    Upon completion of program requirements, students receive:
  • A distinctive cord or pin to wear at high school graduation
  • A certificate recognizing achievement as a Gallon Grad
  • Recognition at high school awards ceremony
  • Satisfaction of saving lives

Background

High school blood donors account for as much as 10% of The Community Blood Center's overall blood donations, making their participation critical to supporting local hospitals and patients.

How to Apply

Application Process

Students must complete two of the following requirements over their high school career (the donate and recruit requirement may be completed twice):

1. Donate blood at least three times
2. Volunteer for a minimum of five hours
3. Recruit a minimum of five new donors (defined as haven't donated in two years)

One-Stop Option: Host a blood drive to automatically fulfill all Gallon Grad requirements. Work with a CBC representative for all details, including meeting minimum requirements for a successful blood drive.

Volunteer Requirement Options

Students can fulfill the five-hour volunteer requirement by:

#### Option 1: Direct Volunteering

  • Volunteer with their high school blood drive

  • Volunteer with a community blood drive

  • Volunteer at a donor center
  • #### Option 2: Donor Story

  • Answer a brief questionnaire (3-5 sentences each for all questions)

  • Submit a picture of yourself for CBC to use in promoting high school blood donors

  • May be used on CBC website, in marketing materials, or on social media
  • Questionnaire Questions:
    1. Why did you choose to start donating with The Community Blood Center?
    2. How does it feel to help people who are undergoing cancer treatments or need heart surgery?
    3. How does it feel to know that you're making a difference in the lives of people in your community?
    4. What would you say to someone who has never donated blood before?
    5. Do you know anyone who needs or has received blood or blood products?
    6. How long have you been a donor?
    7. Where do you normally donate?
    8. How do you stay involved in the community and your school?
    9. What are some of your hobbies?
    10. What are your plans after high school?

    Required Documents:

  • Completed questionnaire

  • Picture of yourself

  • Model Release Form (must be completed and returned)
  • Submission: Send required documents to student@communityblood.org

    #### Option 3: Social Media Advocate

  • Requirement: Post about blood donation, share a CBC post, or tag CBC in a minimum of 10 posts

  • Timeline: Spread out over the academic year (1-2 posts every month), must be completed by May 1

  • Platforms: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, or LinkedIn

  • Process: Tag The Community Blood Center in your posts, screenshot all posts, compile into one document

  • Submission: Send document to student@communityblood.org
  • Portal Registration

    • Visit the Gallon Grad portal to create a profile and begin logging your achievements
    • The marketing department will track and enter completed items as volunteer hours in the portal
