Galactosemia Foundation Research Grant Program

Overview: The Galactosemia Foundation provides funding for scientific and medical research related to the identification, treatment, and therapies related to classical galactosemia. The goal of this research initiative is to improve the lives of people with galactosemia.

Focus Areas:
Preferential consideration will be given to:

  • Premature ovarian insufficiency/failure (POI/POF)

  • Neurological deficits (tremors, seizures, movement disorders, etc.)

  • Bone health

  • Cognition and aging

  • Identification and treatment of complications related to Classic Galactosemia

  • Causes of variability of outcomes

  • Treatments or cures

  • Sequela of Classic Galactosemia through the lifespan
  • All galactosemia-related research projects will be evaluated and considered.

    Eligible Project Types

    Four kinds of project designs are eligible:

    A. Research Projects: Rigorous systematic investigations answering research questions, including but not limited to:

  • Investigations of measurable outcomes in galactosemia care

  • Epidemiology of galactosemia

  • Novel treatments for galactosemia

  • Questions involving genetics, nutrition, diet, speech, physical and occupational therapy, and premature ovarian failure
  • B. Clinical Projects: Seeking to improve galactosemia care through development of tools that may augment care delivery, including but not limited to:

  • Development of clinical pathways

  • Creation of measurement tools (e.g., to assess quality of life)
  • C. Educational Projects: Designs or implements relevant educational programs, develops educational materials, or develops innovative educational tools for patients and the community

    D. Collaborative Meetings: Funds collaborative meetings among professionals that may lead to future research projects

    Grant Structure

    Two-Stage Process:

  • Stage 1: Initial application submission (competitive)

  • Stage 2: By invitation only after Stage 1 review

  • Stage 1 submission is mandatory for Stage 2 consideration

  • Final award decision made by Galactosemia Foundation based on Stage 2 results
  • Funding Amount

    Grants generally are between $10,000 and $50,000, depending upon the scope of the research, clinical, educational, or collaborative project. Grant amounts are dependent on the amount of money available in the Galactosemia Foundation Research Fund.

    Grant Duration

    Once awarded, the grant is for 1 year from time of receiving the awarded money.
