Friends of Camp Colton Scholarship

Award Amount: $500 per recipient (2 scholarships awarded annually)

Geographic Scope: Flagstaff, Arizona area

Eligibility:

  • Must be Camp Colton alumni (attended 6th grade camp experience)

  • Must be a graduating high school senior

  • Must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA

  • Must have been accepted to an accredited two- or four-year college, university, or vocational-technical school
  • Focus/Purpose:
    Scholarship rewards Camp Colton alumni for their camp experiences and how those experiences influenced their lives. The program recognizes the formative impact of the 6th grade outdoor learning experience on students' personal growth, connections with peers, environmental awareness, and STEM career interests.

    Background:
    Friends of Camp Colton launched this scholarship in 2022 to preserve Camp Colton memories while helping offset higher education costs. The program celebrates how middle school camping experiences instill values of natural world preservation, foster discovery, build camaraderie and lasting friendships, and inspire interest in STEM careers.

    Application Requirements

    Submission Deadline: Traditionally due in early May (most recent deadline was May 2)

    Required Materials:
    1. Essay OR video submission
    - Option A: Essay of up to 500 words describing Camp Colton experience and its influence on applicant's life
    - Option B: Three-minute video with same content
    2. Proof of minimum 3.0 GPA
    3. College acceptance letter from accredited institution (two- or four-year college, university, or vocational-technical school)

    Selection Criteria:
    Applicants selected based on quality of essay/video describing Camp experiences and demonstrating how Camp influenced their life trajectory and future plans. Selection committee looks for clear connections between Camp experiences and applicant's educational and career goals.
