Frederick Soddy Schools Award Grant

The Frederick Soddy Schools Award, established in 2018, supports UK and Ireland schools in conducting field studies focusing on human geography. Grants range from £200 to £600, aimed at teachers leading school pupil groups. This initiative addresses the difficulty schools face in securing funding for fieldwork, promoting educational expeditions that explore social, economic, and cultural aspects of various regions. Schools previously funded are encouraged to apply for new projects.

The Frederick Soddy Schools Award scheme was created in 2018 when the Frederick Soddy Trust became a linked charity of the Society, creating a new set of grants, the Frederick Soddy Awards, to support school and student fieldwork and expeditions. Prior to 2018 the Frederick Soddy Schools Award was promoted for the Frederick Soddy Trust by the Geographical Association. The work of the Trust will be continued through the Frederick Soddy Awards, by providing funding to schools, students and postgraduates for studies of the social, economic and cultural life of specific regions within the United Kingdom, Ireland or elsewhere in the world.
Schools often find it difficult to compete successfully for funds from the main grant-giving bodies or to allocate their own resources to field studies. The aim of the Frederick Soddy Schools Awards is to encourage field studies by providing financial support specifically for this work.
Funding
Awards are made of £200 to £600, and cannot support the costs of physical resources.

Eligibility

These awards are given to teachers leading groups of school pupils. Applications are welcomed from UK and Ireland schools planning fieldwork involving a strong element of human geography.

Ineligibility

Awards are not given for resources.
