About Fred Wilbur Tanner (1888-1957):

• American food scientist, microbiologist, and professor at University of Illinois
• Served in the founding of the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT)
• Founder and editor of Food Research journal (now Journal of Food Science)
• IFT President 1945-46
• Author of more than 150 publications in microbiology and public health
• Recipient of Stephen M. Babcock Award (now Babcock-Hart Award)
• Posthumously awarded the Pasteur Award
