Feeding Families Fund: United We Eat

Status: Established March/April 2020 during COVID-19 pandemic

Geographic Scope: Central New Mexico (Bernalillo, Sandoval, Torrance, and Valencia counties)

Focus Areas:

  • Providing meals for families in care of participating agencies

  • Supporting local restaurants and food service providers

  • Addressing food insecurity
  • Eligible Agencies: 13 partner agencies including:

  • All Faiths

  • Casa Esperanza

  • CLN Kids

  • Endorphin Power Company

  • Haven House (Sandoval County)

  • Ronald McDonald House

  • St. Terese of Calcutta Soup Kitchen (Valencia County)
  • Award Details:

  • Funds distributed to agencies based on equitable allocation relative to number of families served

  • Initial gift: $15,000 from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico

  • Total contributions: $236,540

  • 16,343 meals provided

  • 41 restaurants/food trucks engaged over 7-16 weeks

  • Approximately 1,326 meals provided weekly to 314 adults and 104 children
  • Purpose: Addresses immediate and unanticipated needs by providing:

  • Safety net for families struggling to provide meals

  • Support for nonprofit agencies caring for families

  • Economic support for restaurants maintaining payroll
  • Background: Fund conceived by donors Billy and Rachel Gupton and Lynn and Craig Trojahn, long-time United Way supporters who wanted to benefit agencies serving families while supporting the restaurant industry during COVID-19.
