"Encuentros" Mentorship Program

Overview: A structured mentorship program designed to connect Mexican students with professionals to provide guidance on higher education in the United States and STEM careers.

Geographic Scope: Washington DC area (primary location); Mexican students and Spanish-speaking professionals in the United States

Partners: MXDC, Education USA, Enseña por México (Teach for All, Mexico Chapter)

Program Duration:

  • Mentors: 14 weeks total

  • Mentees: 10 weeks total

  • Sessions held weekly, 45 minutes each

  • College preparation

  • Higher education in the United States

  • STEM introduction

  • Career guidance
  • Mentee Topics Covered:

  • Subject area interests exploration

  • Being Mexican in Washington DC/United States

  • Benefits of college education

  • Mentor Requirements:

  • Undergraduate or graduate degree from accredited 4-year US university

  • Age 22 or older

  • Spanish-speaking preferred

  • Available for weekly virtual sessions

  • Available to respond to mentee questions via email

  • Mandatory 4-hour training completion
  • Mentee Requirements:

  • Complete homework assignments throughout program

  • Participate in weekly 45-minute sessions

  • Engage with assigned mentor
  • Program Elements:

  • Ice-breaker workshop at program start

  • Mentor-mentee matching based on similar interests

  • Monthly evaluation and task assignment

  • Education USA facilitation of training and program outline
