Overview

EMS Case Report Grant Program

Funder: Pittsburgh Emergency Medicine Foundation (PEMF)

Geographic Scope: Western Pennsylvania (preferred); all prehospital clinicians eligible

Focus Areas:

  • Early-stage research by prehospital clinicians

  • Case reports and case report series from EMS personnel

  • Unique or rare patient conditions

  • Atypical care settings or environments

  • Uncommon patient responses to typical care

  • Innovation in skills, equipment, or protocols
  • Purpose:
    Improve clinical care in the out-of-hospital setting by supporting local EMS clinicians who highlight unique patient care encounters and submit case reports to peer-reviewed journals. Builds a pipeline of future investigators in emergency medicine.

    Eligibility:

  • EMTs

  • Paramedics

  • Flight nurses

  • Flight paramedics

  • Other prehospital clinicians

  • Must reside in Western Pennsylvania (preferred)

  • Must currently work in eligible prehospital role

  • Must have cared for patient with rare/unique condition, provided care in unique way/atypical setting, OR had patient respond uncommonly to typical care
  • Key Requirements:

  • Prehospital clinician must partner with local attending/receiving emergency physician

  • Collect prehospital and in-hospital (emergency department) medical records

  • Write draft manuscript

  • Submit manuscript to peer-reviewed scientific journal

  • Manuscript does NOT need to be published, but submission is key outcome
  • Award Details:

  • $500 per grant

  • Issued directly to prehospital clinician

  • Recipient may be required to complete tax documentation
