Overview

Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP)

Overview: The EFSP was created in 1983 to supplement and expand the work of local social service agencies, both nonprofit and governmental, in an effort to help people with economic emergencies (not disaster-related emergencies).

Geographic Scope: Cuyahoga County, Ohio

Funding Amount: In FY 2023, the Cuyahoga County Emergency Food and Shelter Program Board was awarded $546,076 in Federal dollars from the $130 million made available nationally (Phase 41 of the program).

Focus Areas: Funds must be used to supplement:

  • Feeding programs

  • Sheltering (including transitional sheltering)

  • Rent/mortgage and utility assistance efforts only
  • Eligibility:

  • Open to all nonprofit and governmental organizations

  • Organizations must have demonstrated capability to provide emergency food and/or shelter

  • Helping people experiencing hunger and/or homelessness
  • Award Requirements:

  • All awards must be expended by recipient organizations within the funding cycle
  • Funding Source: Federal dollars awarded under the Department of Homeland Security Appropriations
