Education Grants

Program Focus: Promotes education on Indian land ownership and management through land history and tenure education.

Overview:
Many Indian land tenure issues stem from widespread lack of knowledge about the history, cultural significance and legal status of Indian lands. ILTF supports education that reaches all generations of Indian and non-Indian people, from young children to adults seeking accurate understanding of Indian-United States relations.

Primary Focus Areas:

• Professional development for K-12 teachers using the curriculum

Eligible Entities:

• Tribal, local and state governments
• Nonprofit organizations with 501(c)(3) designation
• Institutions

Activities NOT Funded:

• Advocacy and lobbying efforts to influence legislation
• Endowments
• Land purchases
• Benefits, fundraisers, walk-a-thons, telethons, galas, etc.
• Scholarships, tuition assistance or other direct funding to individuals
• Special events (except when event is key strategy in continuum of efforts to achieve community goals)

Example Grantee:
Koahnic Broadcasting Corporation received $25,000 to produce "Our Sacred Spaces," a four-part series on sacred lands and resources examining cultural and legal aspects of Native land ownership. Series aired on more than 300 public and tribal radio stations in 32 states.

1. Submit a Letter of Inquiry (LOI)
- Review eligibility requirements and funding priorities before submitting
- Review list of activities ILTF does not fund
- Send letter of inquiry to ILTF
