Overview

Duke Award Scholarship

Overview: A one-time award created to recognize an outstanding Hawaii high school senior who exemplifies the character and personality traits of Duke Kahanamoku.

Award Amount: Up to $15,000 (one-time award)

Geographic Scope: Hawaii only (high school seniors)

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Hawaii high school senior

  • Must fulfill Ambassador of Aloha Scholarship requirements at the highest level

  • Minimum cumulative GPA: 3.5

  • Must demonstrate exceptional ability to compete at a high level of athletics

  • Must be outstanding in athletics, academics, AND community service

  • Must exemplify the character and personality traits of Duke Kahanamoku
  • Nomination Process:

  • Applicants must be nominated by a school athletic official, school administrator, or coach

  • Each school or sports club may nominate up to 3 candidates

  • Only 3 to 6 Hawaii high school seniors are selected as finalists each year
  • Financial Need: Not a requirement but may be weighed as a determining factor

    Selection Notes:

  • Duke Award applications not selected for interviews are automatically rolled over to the Ambassador of Aloha application pool

  • Students without a nomination from their school official will only be considered for the Ambassador of Aloha Scholarships

  • Finalists are showcased at Duke's Night event with white envelope reveal of top awardee

    How to Apply

    Application Process

    Nomination Requirements:
    1. Nomination must come from a school athletic official, school administrator, or coach
    2. Nominator should verify nominee demonstrates ability to compete at high level of athletics
    3. Nominator should verify nominee is outstanding in athletics, academics, AND community service
    4. Once nomination is verified, a link and password to the Duke Award application is emailed to the student

    Online Application Includes:
    1. Essay and short-answer questions
    2. Transcript of Grades
    3. Three Letters of Personal Reference
    4. Athletic Resume (Last Four Years)
    5. FAFSA Submission Summary

    Additional Documentation: ODKF reserves the right to ask for further financial need documentation if needed.

    Important Notes:

  • Incomplete applications will not be considered

  • Applicants should ensure every field is completed

  • Students not selected as finalists are automatically considered for Ambassador of Aloha Scholarships

  • No need to apply to both programs
