Overview

Diversity in the Arts Award

Geographic Scope: State of West Virginia

Purpose:
Recognizes significant contributions of an individual or organization in West Virginia that has influenced and/or increased diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in the Arts.

Award Criteria:

  • Acknowledges and celebrates leadership and excellence in advancing DEI

  • Awardee serves as a role model and champion

  • Exemplifies DEI support, resources or involvement in various communities

  • Engages in outreach, service, educational or other activities that foster inclusion and belonging for everyone
  • Program Benefits:
    The WVSO works with award recipients to provide beneficial exposure of the artist's/organization's work to the community.

    Award Discretion:
    Awards are made at the discretion of the WVSO's Board of Directors. The Board's Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee may choose not to grant an award in a given year.

    Award Process:

  • DEI Committee receives nominations

  • Committee makes recommendation to Board of Directors' Executive Committee for approval

  • DEI Committee members may not make nominations, but other WVSO Board members may

    Background:
    Created during the 2023-2024 season as the WVSO progressed its commitment to reduce and eliminate barriers to music. First award given in 2024 to The Norman Jordan African American Arts & Heritage Academy.

    How to Apply

    Application Process

    1. Submit Nomination: Online nominations accepted through the WVSO portal at wvsymphony.org/diversity-in-the-arts-award
    2. Deadline: September 30 (annual submission deadline; 11:59 p.m.)
    3. Review Process:
    - DEI Committee receives and reviews nominations
    - Committee makes recommendation to Board of Directors' Executive Committee
    - Executive Committee provides final approval
    4. Announcement: Awards announced following board approval

    Eligibility to Nominate:

  • WVSO Board members (not engaged in DEI Committee) may make nominations

  • DEI Committee members may NOT make nominations
